Three Things To Do

Now Twelfth Night is upon us, firmly marking the end of the old year, it’s time to look ahead.

Here’s three things to do this year:

1.   Join a local family history or local history society

Almost all of these societies have regular meetings, often with guest speakers:  most family history societies publish regular journals and have libraries. Some run classes.  It’s a good way to meet like-minded folk who are willing to advise you or help with your research.

Family history societies are listed here: www.ffhs.org.uk and local history societies here:  www.local-history.co.uk/Groups/

If your family come from a different area to that in which you live (or a different country) you might like to consider joining the society for that area.

2.  Subscribe to a family history or local history magazine

There are plenty of these available:  subscribing directly to a magazine (rather than just picking a copy up from your local newsagent) often entitles you to extra perks.

Shop around first to find one that you like.

3.  Visit a family history or local history fair

You can find plenty of goodies at fairs, and many fairs also include talks on specialised subjects as part of the day.  Some fairs will have experts on hand who can advise you on your research.

They can also be a good way to track down out-of-print or second hand books at reasonable prices, particularly if you visit a fair some distance away from the area your family come from:  many dealers are targetting the ‘local’ area, and may have discounted books which deal with the other side of the county.
